Module summary

A basic course for students who have not done A-level Mathematics. The module covers some basic mathematical techniques which have applications in Business and in Economics. It has been designed for Foundation year students intending to proceed to degree programmes in the Business School.

Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able to:
- solve systems of linear equations in 2 or more unknowns
- solve problems involving compound interest and geometric series
- solve simple difference equations
- carry out basic algebraic operations on matrices
- evaluate determinants of 2 x 2 and 3 x 3 matrices
- apply any of the above techniques to problems in business and economics.

Syllabus

- Graphs of linear equations, elimination methods, supply and demand analysis
- Percentages, compound interest, discounting, geometric series, calculating the APR
- Linear difference equations, simple economic models
- Addition, subtraction and multiplication of matrices
- The inverse of a matrix
- Evaluation of determinants
- Eigenvalues of a matrix
- Linear programming
